Frequently asked questions
Why do jewellers in Egypt quote a different price?
This page shows raw gold: the world ounce converted at the bank exchange rate. Jewellers add making charges, a 14% VAT on the making charge, and the local market often trades at a premium or discount to the world price depending on demand and dollar availability.
Which karat is standard in Egypt?
21K (87.5% gold) is the standard for Egyptian jewellery, 24K for bars and gold pounds, 18K for stone-set pieces. The 21K price is 21/24 of the 24K price.
What is the Egyptian gold pound?
A coin of 8 g of 21K gold, the favourite savings instrument because its making charge is low and resale is easy. Its value is the 21K gram price times 8, shown at the top of this page.
Does the price include making charges?
No. All prices here are for raw gold before making charges, hallmarking and tax; the fair-price tool on this site shows whether a quoted making charge is reasonable.
Why is the Sagha price higher than the price here?
Because the price here is raw gold only; the jeweller adds the making charge, hallmarking, 14% VAT on the making and a margin, plus a local premium on days when dollars are scarce.
What is the gold pound worth today?
The 21K gram price × 8, about EGP 49,277 today before the small making charge on coins.
Gold pound or bar for saving?
The gold pound is easier to sell by the piece in any Sagha shop and suits small amounts; bars have higher purity and lower making charges for large weights.
Is there tax when I sell used gold?
No VAT on your sale of scrap; the jeweller buys at the raw value less a condition deduction.

The Egyptian gold market: what makes it different
Egypt is one of the largest gold markets in the Arab world, with its own habits in karats, units and tax: 21K as the standard for jewellery, the gold pound (8 grams of 21K) as the favourite savings coin, VAT of 14% charged on the making charge only, and a local market that can drift from the world formula when dollars are scarce. The price above is raw gold per gram in Egyptian pounds at the official reference rate; this page explains what a shop adds to it and how the market works for buyers and sellers.
Karats: why 21K
21K (87.5% gold) has been the standard for Egyptian jewellery for decades: harder than 24K for daily wear, with more gold than 18K so it keeps more value at resale. 18K is used for modern designs, brands and stone-set pieces; 24K is reserved for bars and investment coins; 22K appears in pieces imported from the Gulf and India. Egyptians buying to save prefer 21K because its resale market is the widest and its deduction the smallest.
Units: the gram and the gold pound
The base unit is the gram, and the price is announced per gram for each karat. The second unit is the gold pound (الجنيه الذهب): a coin of 8 grams of 21K (7 grams of fine gold), struck with the Egyptian hallmark and sold with a small making charge; it is the savings vehicle of Egyptian families for weddings and occasions. Its price is the 21K gram price × 8, about EGP 49,277 today (November 7, 2026) before the making charge. The British Sovereign (7.98 g of 22K, "the English pound") is also traded by its fine-gold weight.
Tax: 14% VAT on the making charge only
Egyptian VAT of 14% applies to the making charge only, not to the value of the gold itself. A 10 g piece with a making charge of EGP 100 per gram carries VAT on EGP 1,000 of making (EGP 140), not on the whole price. This keeps the final price closer to the raw gold price than in countries that tax the full amount. Bars and gold pounds are sold with small making charges under the same rule. Always ask for an invoice that itemises weight, karat, making charge and VAT.
Making charges in the Sagha
Making charges are quoted in pounds per gram and vary with the piece: roughly EGP 40–110 per gram for gold pounds and bars, 60–150 for chains, bangles and sets, 90–220 for rings and earrings, and more for stone-set pieces and brands. The traditional districts (the Sagha and Khan el-Khalili in Cairo, the gold streets of Alexandria and the provincial cities) charge less than mall shops. The fair price tool compares any jeweller's quote with these ranges directly.
How a jeweller prices in Egypt
The Gold Division of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce announces an indicative gram price for each karat that moves through the day with the ounce and the dollar, and shops price from it: weight × gram price for the karat + making charge per gram × weight + 14% VAT on the making. When buying from you (scrap), the jeweller pays the raw value less a deduction of 3–10% depending on condition, and never refunds the making charge. In periods of dollar scarcity the Sagha price can trade at a premium or discount to the world formula; compare the announced price with the computed one here before you decide.
Regulators and the hallmark
The Stamping and Weights Authority (مصلحة الدمغة والموازين) of the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade stamps jewellery with the Egyptian hallmark showing the karat, and the stamp is required for a piece to be sold legally; unstamped or illegible pieces are bought at a larger discount or refused. The Gold and Jewellery Division of the chambers of commerce represents the trade and publishes the indicative prices. A disputed karat can be tested at the Authority.
Tips for buyers in Egypt
- Compare the shop's announced gram price with the computed price here; the normal gap is the making charge and VAT only.
- Negotiate the making charge, not the gold price.
- For saving: gold pounds, bars, or heavy simple pieces of 21K.
- Keep the invoice; it fixes the resale price later and proves the karat.
- Check the day-by-day archive to see where the price stands in the recent range.
