Frequently asked questions
What is a tola and how much does it weigh?
A tola is 11.664 g, the traditional unit for gold in Pakistan. This page shows 24K and 22K per tola as the headline and the per-gram price for every karat below.
Which karat is used in Pakistani jewellery?
21K and 22K are standard for jewellery, 24K for bars and coins, 18K for stone-set pieces. Prices scale with purity: 21K is 21/24 of the 24K price.
Why does the Sarafa rate differ from this page?
The All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association publishes a local rate that includes the rupee's market rate, import costs and local demand, so it runs above the converted world spot price shown here.
What moves the gold price in Pakistan?
The world ounce in dollars and the rupee's exchange rate: when either rises, the local price rises. Both appear live on this page.
How many grams is a tola?
11.6638 grams; the tola rate is the gram rate multiplied by 11.664.
Is gold hallmarked in Pakistan?
Not compulsorily; the karat is the seller's claim, so buy from established shops and ask for testing on large purchases.
Why does the gold rate change when the world price did not?
Because the rupee moved against the dollar; the rupee rate is the world ounce price times the exchange rate.
Who sets the daily rate?
The jewellers' association publishes a daily rate per tola and per 10 grams from the world price and the interbank rupee rate, and shops follow it.

The Pakistani gold market: what makes it different
Pakistan prices gold by the tola, a traditional unit that most of the world has forgotten, and its market is driven as much by the rupee as by the world ounce. Jewellery is mostly 22K and 21K, bars and coins are 24K, there is no compulsory national hallmark, and the daily rate that shops follow comes from the jewellers' association rather than from an exchange. The price above is raw gold per gram and per tola in rupees at today's exchange rate; this page explains the units, the karats, the pricing and what to check before you buy or sell.
The tola and the gram
One tola is 11.6638 grams; the shop rate is quoted per tola and, increasingly, per 10 grams. At today's price (November 7, 2026) a gram of 24K is Rs 36,208.85, so a tola of 24K is about Rs 36,208.85 × 11.664, and a gram of 22K is Rs 33,191.45. Because the rupee moves against the dollar every day, the tola rate in rupees can rise or fall on a day the world ounce did not move; the dollar rate used here is shown next to the table so you can separate the two effects.
Karats: 22K and 21K jewellery, 24K bars
22K (916) is the standard for bridal and traditional jewellery, 21K (875) is common in everyday pieces and in Gulf-style jewellery brought back by expatriates, 18K in lighter and stone-set designs, and 24K (999) in bars and coins used for saving. Shops quote a rate for 24K and 22K and derive the rest; always confirm which karat the quoted rate refers to, since a 22K rate applied to a 21K piece overcharges you by about 4.5%.
No compulsory hallmark: how to protect yourself
Pakistan has no nationwide mandatory hallmarking scheme, so the karat is the jeweller's claim. Buy from established shops in the gold bazaars (the Sarafa bazaars of Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Peshawar), ask for a written receipt with weight, karat and rate, and for larger purchases ask for an XRF test or an independent assay; many bazaar shops offer testing. Imported bars from accredited refiners (LBMA or Dubai Good Delivery) carry their own serial number and certificate and are the easiest to resell at full value.
The daily rate and how shops price
The All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association publishes a daily rate per tola and per 10 grams for 24K and 22K, based on the world ounce and the interbank rupee rate, and shops price from it. A piece costs: weight × the karat rate + the making charge (per tola or per gram) + any stone charges. Making charges are quoted per tola for traditional sets and per gram for lighter pieces, and they vary widely with the intricacy of the work; bridal sets carry the highest charges. The fair price tool converts any quote into a making charge per gram so you can compare shops.
Selling gold in Pakistan
Jewellers buy back gold at the day's rate for its karat less a deduction (typically 3–8% for ordinary jewellery, more for stone-set or lightweight work, less for bars and coins), and the making charge you paid is not returned. Have the piece weighed in front of you and the karat tested; keep the original receipt, which usually improves the buy-back offer at the same shop. Exchanging old jewellery for new at the same jeweller is common and often cheaper than selling and buying separately.
Tips for buyers in Pakistan
- Note the day's tola rate before you go, and ask which karat the shop's rate refers to.
- Insist on a receipt with weight, karat and rate; it is your evidence when you sell.
- For saving, 24K bars or coins from accredited refiners with a certificate and serial number.
- For large purchases, ask for an XRF test.
- Follow the day-by-day archive to see the rupee rate and the recent range together.
