Frequently asked questions
Is gold really cheaper in Dubai?
Raw gold costs the same everywhere; Dubai stands out for low making charges thanks to competition in the Gold Souk, 5% VAT that tourists can reclaim on departure, and guaranteed purity. For the same weight and karat, jewellery is usually cheaper than in many countries.
Which karats are sold in the UAE?
24K for bars and coins, 22K for Indian and Gulf jewellery, 21K for Arab designs and 18K for stone-set pieces. Prices here are per gram in dirhams for each karat, before making charges and VAT.
How does the dirham peg affect the price?
The dirham is fixed at 3.6725 per dollar, so the dirham gold price follows the world ounce directly, with no exchange-rate effect.
Souk or mall?
Raw gold is the same price; the difference is the making charge and the shop's margin. The Deira Gold Souk is known for the lowest charges on bars and simple pieces, malls for designer work. Ask for weight, karat and making charge on the invoice.
Why is gold cheaper in Dubai than elsewhere?
The raw price is the same worldwide; the difference is low making charges, 5% VAT, refunds for tourists and the range of supply, not the gold price itself.
Do I pay VAT on a bar in the UAE?
No; investment gold of 99% purity or more is zero-rated. Jewellery carries 5%.
How does a tourist reclaim VAT?
Buy from a shop registered in the refund scheme, get a tax-free tag with the invoice, and present it with the goods at the airport before departure.
Which karat should I buy in Dubai to save?
24K bars and coins (no VAT, small premium), or 22K and 21K in heavy, simple pieces if you also want to wear them.

Today's gold price in the UAE in UAE dirham for every karat, worked out from the world ounce price and the exchange rate. Dubai's gold souk quotes 22K and 24K per gram; VAT is 5% and making charges are usually negotiable.

The UAE gold market: what makes it different
Dubai is one of the world's great gold trading hubs and the reference market for the whole region: low making charges, a wide choice of karats and designs, one of the lowest VAT rates in the Gulf, and a tax-refund scheme for tourists. The dirham is pegged to the dollar at a fixed 3.6725, so the gram price follows the world ounce alone. The price above is raw gold per gram in dirhams; this page explains what a shop adds to it and how to buy and sell with confidence in the Emirates.
Karats: 22K, 21K, 18K and 24K
22K (91.67%) is the most common karat in Dubai's gold souk thanks to South Asian demand, 21K is preferred by Arab buyers, 18K is used for Italian designs, brands and stone-set pieces, and 24K for bars and coins. Shops display the gram price for each karat on boards; it is the raw price before making charges. At today's price (November 7, 2026) a gram of 24K is AED 480.81, of 22K AED 440.74 and of 21K AED 420.71.
VAT: 5% on jewellery, zero on investment gold, refunds for tourists
VAT of 5% applies to the full price of jewellery, the lowest rate among the Gulf states that levy it. Investment gold of 99% purity or more (bars and coins) is zero-rated, so you pay no VAT on it. Tourists can reclaim most of the VAT on purchases from shops registered in the electronic refund scheme when leaving from the airport (about 85% of the VAT is refunded after an administrative fee per transaction); ask the shop to issue the tax-free tag with the invoice and keep the goods in your hand luggage.
Making charges: the lowest in the region
Making charges are quoted in dirhams per gram and are widely negotiable: roughly AED 15–35 per gram on bars and coins, 30–70 on chains and sets, 60–110 on rings and earrings, more on stone-set pieces and brands. The Gold Souk in Deira and the streets around it have the lowest charges because of the density of shops and open competition; mall shops charge more. The fair price tool compares any quote with these ranges directly.
How a jeweller prices in the UAE
Price = weight × the displayed gram price for the karat + making charge per gram × weight, then 5% VAT on the total. Negotiating the making charge is normal in the souk; the gold price itself is rarely negotiated because it is the same in every shop at the same moment. When you sell, the jeweller pays the raw value less 2–7% for jewellery depending on condition and karat, and less for stamped bars; the original invoice makes selling and exchanging easier.
Regulators and bar standards
The Ministry of Economy and the economic departments of each emirate license the gold and jewellery trade and handle consumer protection, and purity is tested in accredited laboratories. For bars, the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre runs the "Dubai Good Delivery" standard for refiners; a bar stamped by a refiner accredited under that standard or under London's LBMA list is accepted in any market without further testing and sells at a smaller discount. Ask for the certificate and serial number with every bar.
Tips for buyers in the UAE
- Negotiate the making charge; differences between neighbouring shops can be double.
- Tourists: ask for the tax-free tag with the invoice and keep the piece with you until departure.
- For saving: 24K bars from an accredited refiner, VAT-free.
- Check the stamped karat against the invoice, and the day-by-day archive for the recent range.
